Brodus Clay Discusses His Gimmick, His Dance Skills, WrestleMania, John Cena & More

A couple of days ago, WWE’s Brodus Clay was interviewed by CBS Radio DC’s Chad Dukes. During the interviews, topics included; how the Funkasaurus character came about, his dancing skills, WrestleMania, John Cena and more. Here are some of the highlights:

On what it was like waiting for WWE to finally give him that push and why they went the Funkasaurus direction: “I had no fingernails for like two months because I was just biting them off every Monday. Literally, I didn’t know (when I would debut). There were signs of the Funkasaurus, but it was always me messing around.

“People always want that angry guy, but it just wasn’t me. It’s hard being mad when you have a job. [Laughs.] It’s hard to be mad, it’s a lot of energy. I just wasn’t feeling it. The GM was pushing me to be this psychopath that he wanted. But, anybody can go out there and be mad — ain’t much creativity to it.

We did those promos and I ended up laughing. It was like, ‘What am I mad about again?’ It was like, until I get you the way I want you, we’re going to keep putting things off. But, eventually, he slipped and let me do it myself.

On who’s idea it was for Brodus to be the Funkasaurus and how big of a risk it is to use the gimmick: “I was terrified because, for one, I’m not a good dancer. As a wall-crawler for my entire club career, I’d find a wall and lean against it to bob my head. That was always my move. I’ve always been witty, I’ll crack jokes and stuff [but] I didn’t see the connect between that and dancing.

“Ultimately, when Triple H said they wanted to see that side of me, I literally looked at him like, ‘Who did I offend and where do I go to apologize?’ Because people who know me and have been around me a long time, they’d go, ‘Oh, yeah. That’s Brodus.’ People who don’t know me, they don’t necessarily want to see that.

“So, I was like, I don’t want to embarrass myself. I’m ripping clothes off and stuff. I could easily look like an out-of-work stripper. So, I was really concerned with a lot of things as it got put together. The bottom like was: if you commit to something, you believe it and you have fun with it, people are going to respect that. Even though I didn’t expect it to take off like this.

“Every time I go out and hit the curtain, I have my back towards [the fans] because I’m getting ready to turn around and have them realize that this dude can’t dance. Every time I turn around, I’m always surprised that they have signs and people are cheering. Everyone wants to call they mama. Which is good because, apparently, people are calling their mamas more. Which is always a good thing. So, I thought it was a big risk.”

On his big performance at this year’s WrestleMania and how John Cena played a part in it: “The powers that be — we’ll call them — they love to just throw things at me and see how I react. Now, when I saw the WrestleMania guide, I saw a big picture of myself and the Funkadactles and I was like, ‘Huh. OK. Well, maybe I’ll get a match. Hopefully, I’ll get a match, maybe the dark or the battle royal.’ That’s kind of where my mind was at. No way in my mind was I even considering that we were going to be dancing before the main event.

“Then, I heard I had a rehearsal. WrestleMania’s the accumulation of a lot of things. All the shareholders come in for all the meetings with the suits and everything. We had to do a dance for them which is a tough crowd of sponsors and stuff like that who are in power point meetings all day. We’re going to break out and dance for them. I was like, ‘Yo, that’s going to be awesome.’

The Miz Discusses His Memorable Matches, Being WWE Champion, The Marine 3, Rey Mysterio & More

wpid the miz 23 The Miz Discusses His Memorable Matches, Being WWE Champion, The Marine 3, Rey Mysterio & More

Recently, former WWE champion The Miz was interviewed by Brazilian television and discussed a number of topics. Topics included; memorable matches, being WWE champion, The Marine 3, Rey Mysterio and more. Here are some of the highlights:

On his most memorable match and his take on some of the legends he’s wrestled: “The most memorable match would be WrestleMania 27 when I retained my title not once but twice and making history. I walked in there as WWE champion and walked out of there WWE champion in front of 70,000 people at the Atlanta Georgia Dome. That is just an incredible feat.

“As far as the legends I’ve wrestled, I mean, I’ve wrestled them all. It’s incredible. These guys that I used to envy and idolize — I’m wrestling. I got to wrestle Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart and I used to be the kid in the front row, hoping that he would give me his sunglasses. I’ve been in the ring with Shawn Michaels, The Undertaker, ‘Rowdy’ Roddy Piper, Marty Jannetty. You name them, I’ve basically been in the ring with them.

“It’s an incredible, incredible feeling as a kid and then growing up into the man that I am, being able to be in the ring with them. I’m living my dream and then exceeding expectations.”

On his secret to being WWE champion and keeping the title: “Win Money In The Bank and then cash it in whenever the champion is weak. That’s the best advice I can give anyone for being a WWE champion. Then, how do you keep it? Cheat as much as you possibly can because that’s all I did.

“I know I’m not the biggest, most agile or athletic. I’m not the best wrestler in the world. But, I’ll tell you what: I have the brains and the determination to win at all cost. No matter what. I will cheat, lie, and steal — I’ll do whatever I possibly can to keep the title whenever I have it. Kids: I’m not that role model right there. Don’t do that and don’t try anything I do in the ring at home because it’s very dangerous.”

On his starring role in the upcoming movie, The Marine 3 and comparing his acting chops to The Rock: “I’ll be starring in The Marine 3 and it should be absolutely incredible because I’m an amazing actor. I’m going to use my method acting. I’d imagine that I’m going to win an Oscar for my performance in The Marine 3.

“But, no. It’s going to be a great action flick. I’m excited to do it. It’s quite an honor whenever WWE Studios puts a WWE superstar as the lead in a movie and trust that it will do well. I’m going to work my hardest, just like I do each and every day in the ring. I’m going to work my hardest to make this Marine the best that it possibly can be. Hopefully, a new action star is born.

“… No, I’ll be better than The Rock. Even though he was, like, action star of the decade — there’s a new decade. There’s a new guy in town, Rock.”

On which superstar he would most like to have a major feud with: “I haven’t had a real, long feud with Rey Mysterio and I’ve always wanted to have one. Just because he’s an exciting, fast — the crowd just loves him. I would love to just beat him so that the crowd cries and whines. That’s my enjoyment. So, I’d really like to have a feud with Rey Mysterio. And, as always, I’d like to take the WWE championship from C.M. Punk.”

On his favorite tag team partner: “(With) Alex Riley, I was more of a mentor to him just like I was with Daniel Bryan. He’s doing fantastic right now, by the way, and I’ll take all the credit for that. The Big Show, John Morrison…Who was the best tag team partner? I mean, they were all such a different dynamic.

“But, the person that I think really started my whole career and really started elevating me to being someone in the WWE was John Morrison. We just had that chemistry. We had a show on WWE.com called “The Dirt Sheet”, we were multiple time champions. We were together for a year and a half, all the other tag teams I’ve had didn’t last that long. So, I’d have to say that just because of the time and the chemistry.”

On which superstar is his favorite of all time: “My favorite superstar growing up was The Ultimate Warrior. I used to paint my face and put streamers on my arms, run around and annoy my mother everywhere.”

Shawn Michaels Talks Leaving WWE & If He’d Return, Working With HHH And Undertaker At ‘Mania

wpid shawn michaels n3 Shawn Michaels Talks Leaving WWE & If Hed Return, Working With HHH And Undertaker At Mania

Source: The Miami Herald

The Miami Herald has an interview with Shawn Michaels, who was discussing his recent endorsement deal with EyeBlack. HBK also talked a little wrestling, here are some highlights:

Leaving WWE: “I walked away from an extremely well paying job, which is probably not the smartest thing to do, but I did it solely to come home and to help my wife raise our children, to be a part of their lives. WWE would have allowed me to work any kind of way that I wanted. I could have very easily have said, ‘Hey, I’d like to slow down over the next couple of years, do a few things here and there,’ and I think everybody would have been fine with that, but for me, I think that would have probably been harder on me. Personally, I think the job would be harder for me to do, personally, on a semi, here and there, in and out type basis.

“It’s easier, and I think I’m better at it when I’m doing it or I’m not. So for me I felt it was better to walk away completely.”

Returning to the ring: “You have to be careful because if you leave it as an open option, you’re going to be getting calls on a regular basis. Every time somebody gets injured or every time somebody comes up with an idea, the phone is going to be ringing, and you’re going to have to deal with ‘should I or shouldn’t I?’ I didn’t want to run into that. I didn’t want to put myself through that, and I didn’t want to put the company through that.

“I’m certainly not going to wrestle, but if you need me for something, if you’re in a bind, you can give me a buzz, and I’ll be more than happy to be there and help out any way I can.”

Being a part of WrestleMania 28 with Undertaker and Triple H: “For me, it was about three of us who have been there — for the most part — the longest of anybody and probably the last of the Mohicans, so to speak. It was three guys who had been sharing that locker-room for a long time, doing this in some form or another, whether it was me and Hunter, me and Taker, Taker and Hunter. The three of us have run the gamut of being in and out of the ring with each other and going through ups and downs, personally and professionally, and this is the last time the three of us will be in the ring together. That’s what the End of an Era was to me.”

Much more is contained in the interview, including Michaels revealing when he became a fan of hunting and fishing, his endorsement deal, why he retired and much more. You can check it out by clicking here.

Kevin Von Erich Note, Dory Funk Remembers Gorgeous George Jr., More

- WWE Hall of Famer Kevin Von Erich turns 55 today.

- Infinite Promotions will run their first show on May 26th, in Liverpool, UK. The show will see the launch of the British Wrestling Premier League, which will have matches contested under the old British Rules/World of Sport style; with rounds, public warnings and two-falls to a finish. More information can be found at infinitepromotions.co.uk.

- Dory Funk Jr. sent out the following press release remembering Gorgeous George Jr.:

We are sorry to hear of the passing of Gorgeous George Jr.

Gorgeous George Jr. was a main event performer in the Amarillo Territory in 1968 and 1969 as a single and as the partner of Buddy Colt.

On April 14th of 1969 in El Paso, Texas I faced Gorgeous George Jr. in a 30 minute match for the NWA World Championship. Gorgeous George Jr. put on a fabulous performance that night before a capacity crowd in the El Paso Coliseum.

I will always remember the night Victor the Bear came to Amarillo for a Bear Over the Top Battle Royal – Early in the day the local Game Warden, Woody Pond came to my father and said a Black Bear was a game animal, protected and could not perform in an exhibition wrestling match.

It was Gorgeous George Jr.’s Idea with the approval of my father, Dory Funk Sr. that George and Buddy Colt go down town and buy a case of Lady Clairol Hair Spray and that night in the dressing room, Gorgeous George and Buddy Colt sprayed Victor the Black Bear with the full case of Lady Clairol Hair Spray and Victor entered the ring as Boris the Russian Brown Bear.

The Bear was angry over the smell of the Lady Clairol Hair Spray all over his body and came to the ring a growling, angry 600 pound bear. The bear chased everybody out over the top rope except Me, My Father, Dory Funk Sr. and Gorgeous George.

With quick thinking by my father, Dad and I undid the turnbuckles in the corners of the ring and dropped the 3 ropes down to the apron of the ring. Next, Dad and I got the attention of the Bear and Gorgeous George tackled Victor the Black Bear (Alias Boris the Russian Brown Bear) in the buttocks and the Bear was out over the top rope. (Even though all the ropes were laying on the apron of the ring)

Some of the fans in Amarillo were mad that night claiming that Gorgeous George Jr. and The Funks Cheated the Bear.

We will all miss Gorgeous George Jr. He was a dear friend and great performer. Our condolences to his family.

Dory Funk Jr.
